Black Forest Cherry Cake with Kids!

It was Daddy’s birthday over the summer! It’s tradition to make him a schwartzwaldekirschtorte–otherwise known as a Black Forest Cherry Cake. You just can’t go wrong with chocolate and cherry!

Well, it occurred to me as I was pinning recipes that really I could let the kids “decorate” the cake because it was mostly layering! Sure enough, it was a blast letting them help and it made Daddy happy to know they’d made it for him!

So, to start, we made the chocolate cake, following the one and only Hershey’s recipe for Perfectly Chocolate Chocolate Cake!

We made this the day before, and the next day we decorated.

First, I made the chocolate frosting (see the bottom of the cake recipe) during nap, to help things along. Then I pulled out a container of whipped cream, a can of cherry pie filling, and a jar of maraschino cherries.

Then we layered!

Layers were (from bottom to top):

  1. Chocolate cake
  2. Cherry pie filling
  3. Whipped cream
  4. Chocolate cake
  5. Chocolate frosting
  6. Maraschino cherries dotted on top

(Next time I think I’d put the whipped cream on top and the chocolate frosting within the cake because it was extremely rich and thick like a ganache.)

It also ended up as a bit of a mudslide cake because I had to transport it. But oh. My. Goodness. What flavor!!

So there you have it, your kids can help make the next birthday cake: a Black Forest Cherry Cake no less!
