Chalkboard paint is all over Pinterest right now; I’ve been pinning ideas for a year and only just finally got around to doing some! I bought a can of chalkboard paint ages ago at Hobby Lobby. I actually bought it to paint a table top, but there’s so much and now that I’ve opened it, I’ve been trying to use it on anything and everything I can think of!
I’ve tried to come up with a few unique ideas to share. They may be similar to some other ideas on Pinterest so I won’t say they’re “new” but perhaps you’ll come up with some new ideas inspired by these! (If you do, be sure to let me know in the comments!)
1) Chalkboard Trays
I had some plastic trays from a wedding gift basket that I’ve been using as drip trays for painting. I decided to chalkboard paint over these to make travel boards!
2) Chalkboard Clock/Face
#2 and #3 are connected because I took an old lazy Susan that had fallen apart but was nice wood so I’d saved it for a “someday upcycle project.” The bottom I plan to use primarily to start teaching Bean how to read a clock face. But then I realized I could also teach him how to draw face parts, too! Any other round ideas?
3) Chalkboard Quote Board
This one is similar to some other ideas on Pinterest but the ones I found all use pots and pans. I thought I could do a similar thing on the large upper part of the lazy Susan since it had such a nice wooden lip for a frame.
4) Chalkboard City
Here I took old cereal boxes I’ve been saving forever to upcycle and thought if I put chalkboard paint on them we could use them to make different backdrops for all sorts of play!
5) Chalkboard Book
This is the idea I’m most excited about because I think it actually is a new idea! I took an old board book we don’t read anymore (it was also free from the doctor) and painted it with chalkboard paint. I’m going to paint over the cover, too, I just wanted to show you mid-project to give you a better understanding of the process. Now we can bring it on trips with some chalk and it can be used in so many ways for travel play! Bean could even write (or draw) his own story in there! I may have to make more of these…
So there you have it: five unique uses for chalkboard paint! Please share your own ideas in the comments–I still have some paint to use up… 😉
