Although this post is a year old, it’s never too late to share more fun birthday ideas!
For Bean’s second birthday, we chose a theme in line with his all-time favorite book: The Little Blue Truck.
For invites, I used Facebook and uploaded a fun photo of Bean:
I made the cake myself! Not as fancy as my sister’s (for Bird’s first birthday), but I did it myself, it tasted delicious, and Bean recognized it, so I count that as success! I took a Lightning McQueen pan (from the movie Cars) and turned it into the truck from the book with vanilla buttercream frosting and chocolate buttercream frosting (so the black wouldn’t taste nasty from the food coloring). Yum!
I decorated simply with lots of blue and images from the book. I hung blue balloons and blue streamers, made banners and dangling hangers with printed images of the Little Blue Truck, decorated the table with a black tablecloth and yellow stripes down the middle for a “road,” laminated the cover image from the book to make labels for the food and to cover the silverware holder, and used the books and Bean’s own Little Blue Truck as decor!
For a take-home snack we made “Muddy Buddies” (because the book is about a dump truck getting stuck in the mud): melt chocolate chips and peanut butter, coat rice Chex cereal, then dust with powdered sugar. We put them in cute little mason jars with red gingham tops tied on with twine.
The kids had a great time bopping the balloons around while the adults talked. Fun, cheap, easy entertainment!
All in all, I thought it was a very successful second birthday considering no one cried and the birthday boy had fun! 🙂 What are some simple decorations you’ve done for kids’ birthdays?
