Children’s Church: The Lord’s Prayer

This last Sunday we talked about how to pray at Children’s Church with the preschoolers. It ended up being a short class lesson, and ALL boys! My favorite part was when I asked them to share what prayers they do before they eat. Every boy had a different song to share!

Ours is the Superman Prayer (sung to the tune of the Superman theme song from the movies):

Thank you, God, for giving us food.

Thank you, God, for giving us food.

We praise you. We praise you.

Hallelujah! Amen!

Of course, you can change the first part to whatever the kids are thankful for, but generally we sing this before mealtimes.

Another one was:

Thank you for the world so sweet,

Thank you for the food we eat.

Thank you for the birds that sing,

Thank you God for everything.

And one 3-year-old already knew the Lord’s Prayer!

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.

Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For yours is the kingdom and the power and glory forever. Amen.

We did one quick puzzle craft with the kids to start. I visited the House Mix blog and found a colorful printable poster of the prayer. I printed it out and laminated it and cut it into pieces for each kid. In class, I showed them how they fit together as a puzzle, but figured at home they could also be used as flashcards to help the kids learn the prayer.

At Ministry to Children they have a wonderful printable to tell you more about the Five Finger Prayer, which was the next craft. My plan was to walk through the printable with the kids and have them draw who they were praying for on the back. We only finished the first one, but that was the most important anyway because it was family and friends, so most of them could draw a picture of their mom or dad or sister or brother.

How did you teach your kids to pray? And if you haven’t thought about attempting that yet, I found some incredible ideas on Pinterest you should definitely check out!
